How To Prepare Yerba Mate
Share
Yerba Mate is a traditional South American drink that is known for its numerous health benefits and energizing properties. There are several ways to prepare Yerba Mate to enjoy its unique flavor and benefits. An easy way to think about it for someone new to Yerba Mate is to treat and prepare it like you would coffee.
Here are the ways you can prepare Yerba Mate:
French Press
To prepare Yerba Mate using a French press, simply add the desired amount of Yerba Mate leaves to the French press. Pour hot water (just before boiling) over the leaves and let it steep for a few minutes. Press down the plunger and pour the Yerba Mate into a cup to enjoy.
Cold Brew
For a refreshing cold brew Yerba Mate, add the Yerba Mate leaves to a pitcher of cold water. Let it steep in the refrigerator for 12 - 24 hours. Strain the leaves and serve the cold brew over ice. Feel free to add a little lemon and sugar if you like.
Coffee Maker
If you prefer to treat Yerba Mate like coffee, you can use a coffee maker to brew it. Simply add the Yerba Mate leaves to the coffee maker's filter and brew it as you would coffee. Once brewed, pour the Yerba Mate into a cup and enjoy. My friend Bob makes it like this all the time.
Traditional Gourd and Bombilla
For the most authentic experience, prepare Yerba Mate in a traditional gourd and drink it through a bombilla (metal straw with a filter). Fill the gourd with Yerba Mate leaves, pour hot water over them, and sip the Yerba Mate through the bombilla. Again the hot water should be around 150-170 degrees F which is when you'll start to see small bubbles forming just before boiling.
Enjoying Yerba Mate
Whether you prepare your Yerba Mate in a French press, coffee maker, cold brew or traditional gourd & whether you prefer it hot or cold, sweetened or unsweetened, the main thing is to savor the unique flavor and experience of this traditional drink. Share it with friends and family to spread the joy of Yerba Mate.
