How To Drink Yerba Mate

Yerba Mate, a traditional South American drink, has gained popularity worldwide due to its numerous health benefits and unique flavor. But how exactly can you enjoy this invigorating beverage? Do you need a gourd and bombilla, or are there other options available? In this blog post, we will explore different methods of drinking Yerba Mate, including using a tea ball, French press, gourd and bombilla, or even your favorite cup or mug.

Tea Ball Method

If you're looking for a quick and convenient way to enjoy Yerba Mate, using a tea ball is a great option. Simply fill the tea ball with Yerba Mate leaves, immerse it in hot water, and let it steep for a few minutes. This method allows you to control the strength of the infusion and eliminates the need for additional accessories.

French Press Method - Mate Cocido

For those who prefer a stronger and bolder flavor, using a French press can be an excellent choice. Add Yerba Mate leaves to the French press, pour hot water over them, and let it steep for a few minutes. Then, press the plunger down slowly to separate the leaves from the infusion. This method provides a rich and robust Yerba Mate experience.

Gourd and Bombilla Method

The traditional method of drinking Yerba Mate involves using a gourd and bombilla. A gourd is a hollowed-out container made from a dried calabash fruit, while a bombilla is a metal straw with a filter at the end. To prepare Yerba Mate using this method, fill the gourd with Yerba Mate leaves, insert the bombilla, and pour hot water over the leaves. Sip the infusion through the bombilla, and enjoy the unique flavor and communal experience.

Cup or Mug Method

If you don't have a gourd, don't worry! You can still enjoy Yerba Mate using your favorite cup or mug & bombilla. I've got a few mugs that I absolutely love made by Buck Pottery! Simply fill the cup with Yerba Mate leaves like you would a gourd, insert the bombilla, and pour hot water over the leaves. Sip the infusion through the bombilla, and enjoy.

So, whether you prefer the convenience of a tea ball, the boldness of a French press, the tradition of a gourd and bombilla, or the familiarity of a cup or mug, there are various ways to enjoy Yerba Mate. Experiment with different methods and find the one that suits your taste and lifestyle. Cheers to a refreshing and invigorating Yerba Mate experience!
